Old School RuneScape has just released the terrifying new Hueycoatl boss, as part of its OSRS Varlamore update, and it poses a serious challenge. Beat it though, and you can earn some very exciting new rewards that will make your time in Gielinor a heck of a lot more pleasant.

We want to help you beat Hueycoatl as efficiently as possible though, so we’ve put together this guide. It breaks down the different stages of the fight, what you have to do, and the rewards you can get for doing so.

If you’d like to learn more about the Varlamore update that introduced us to Hueycoatl in the first place, check out our news post. Or, read on for a complete walkthrough on how to defeat the pest.

What is Hueycoatl?

Hueycoatl is OSRS‘s latest group boss, introduced during the Varlamore update on September 26. The boss resides on the peak of the Darkfrost Mountains, and takes the form of a giant serpent.

In Gielinor folklore, Hueycoatl is one of the original inhabitants of the Darkfrost Mountains, then known as ‘Hailstorm’ or ‘Coatlpetl’ depending on who you asked.

The dwarves first discovered the serpent, and sort of see it as a bit of a pest now. So you will team up with the short fellas to knock some sense into it in exchange for rewards.

How Should I Prepare for Hueycoatl?

You need to reach at least 90 Combat Level to take on Hueycoatl, as well as have access to Protection Prayers. We also recommend that you put together a group to take it on, though you may find yourself lucky and encounter one when you reach the boss.

In terms of equipment, Hueycoatl is a draconic enemy, so use a Dragonbane weapon like the Dragon Hunter Lance or Crossbow. You also need a Prayer Regeneration Potion or Chambers of Xeric’s Prayer Enhance to keep your Protection Prayers up for the duration of the fight.

Hueycoatl supports up to 20 players at once, and you will make short work of it if you can pull together that many. A smaller group each featuring a higher Combat Level can still take on the boss though, providing they follow a guide – like this one!

Stage One: Lure Out Hueycoatl

The first stage involves luring out the serpent, and it’s definitely the easiest. It starts the moment you make it to Darkfrost Mountain. As you climb to reach its peak, you will see parts of Hueycoatl sticking out of from caves or rock formations.

Attack these parts whenever you see them to lure out Hueycoatl when you reach the peak. Just be wary: the serpent will retaliate by triggering hazards. We recommend that you keep your Protection Prayers up to mitigate the damage you receive.

Repeat this process until you reach the peak. If you’ve dealt enough damage to the serpent by this point, you will be able to access and take on the next stage.

Stage Two: Aim For the Head

Hueycoatl’s head is the most vulnerable body part, so make sure to aim your attacks at it. The serpent will retaliate with its own attacks, as well as unleashing environmental hazards, so keep those protection prayers up and you should make short work of this stage.

Stage Three: Cut off the Tail of the Snake

The third stage sees Hueycoatl protect itself by curling up, blocking all attacks with its tail. To progress to the final stage, you need to shatter the tail. Simply attack it until it breaks to beat this stage.

Stage Four: Finish it Off

When you break the tail, you will find that Hueycoatl’s head is exposed again. Simply keep attacking it, while maintaining your Protection Prayers, until you defeat it.

Now, let’s take a look at the rewards.

Hueycoatl Rewards

The rewards you can unlock for beating Hueycoatl include:

  • Tome of Earth: Provides infinite Earth Runes and boosts Earth spells damage by +10%
  • Dragon Hunter Wand: Boosts Magic Strength by 10%, Dragonbane Accuracy by +50%, and Dragonbane Strength by +20%
  • Hueycoatl Hide Armour: +8 Prayer Bonus
  • Prayer Regeneration Potion: Regenerates a Prayer Point every 12 ticks for eight minutes

You can also brew the Prayer Regeneration Potion using the Huasca Seed, which also drops from Hueycoatl. You need 58 Herblore and an Aldarium herb to do so.
