Path of Exile has detailed the upcoming Legacy of Phrecia event, which will replace the Atlas Passive Skill Tree system for endgame users.
It’s a mercifully simple new system. As you battle through the Path of Exile endgame, you will drop Idols, which arrive in one of two different forms:
Idol | Modifiers |
Magic Idol | Two Modifiers |
Rare Idol | Four Modifiers |
You then place these maps on a brand new tab on the map screen. This then activates the modifiers on your endgame maps, helping you to earn rarer items.
Why is the Legacy of Phrecia System Better?
Grinding Gear Games is keen to stress that the Legacy of Phrecia system provides you with far more customisability than the current system.

You no longer have to respec the passive skill tree to make a change. Instead, you can just swap the Idols around and venture into a new endgame map to make the change.
This also means you can push stats further than you can under the Atlas system. That had a finite number of combinations, but, given that the Idols you can drop have a lot more variety, that results in near-limitless build options.
Expect On-the-Fly Changes
Given that this system has the potential to completely break the game, Grinding Gear has stressed that you can expect a lot of changes once they drop in the game.
Also, depending on the popularity of the system, the team is keen to introduce new inventory options that will allow you to have different league sets or loadouts to swap between.
Lastly, Grinding Gear Games will introduce these changes to private leagues after the event, so you can experiment with them in a safer environment.
