The Game Awards was in full swing last night, dropping a ton of announcements on us. Perhaps the most exciting of these is the Warframe: 1999 release date, which is coming sooner than you think.
Okay, we won’t tease: it’s landing on December 13. At the time of writing, that’s today, depending on where you live.
For those unaware, Warframe: 1999 is the next big expansion for the long-running ninja shooter. It warps you back to the late 90s, with its wild hair dos, obsession with malls, and ridiculously over the top boybands.
The most exciting feature of the new expansion is that it promises to tell us the origin story of the Warframes themselves. We’ll see new characters join the fray, several of which seem to inspire future Warframes.

What’s New in the Gameplay Department?
In terms of new gameplay content, we obviously get a new map to explore, the city of Höllvania, and it’s packed with 90s references. There’s also a new method of exploring: the Atomicycle. It’s all very Matrix.
You team up with The Hex Syndicate, an elite squad of warriors who look rather familiar, to fight against a whole new villain: the Scaldra and their Techrot. That probably does what the name suggests.
There’s also a new romance and relationship system, which sees you getting to know your fellow characters and, perhaps, falling in love with them. You can even message with them on an adorable 90s-style chat room.
Perhaps most excitingly, there’s a brand new Warframe, Cyte-09, and a new PvPvE mode to participate in called Faceoff.
That’s the broad strokes. If you’d like to learn about everything there is to know about Warframe: 1999, check out the official site.
