One of the biggest complaints about Brighter Shores so far is that its combat professions, which behave quite similarly to each other, are separate. That means you, effectively, have to level the same skill in each episode.

To solve this, Fen Research has announced plans to merge the combat professions into one, which means you don’t have to start from scratch each time you venture into a new episode.

Fen Research is keen to stress that this current plan isn’t set in stone, and may change, but this is the current thinking.

How Will a Merged Combat Profession Work?

Effectively, there will be a single combat profession moving forward, which will face increasingly challenging base monsters as you progress through each episode.

This is how it will work:

EpisodeBase Levels
10 – 30
230 – 60
360 – 100
4100 – 140

Then, each subsequent episode see the base increase by about 40 levels.

To help prevent you accidentally overpowering yourself, your maximum combat level is capped to the maximum combat level of the highest episode you have unlocked. So, if you’ve accessed Hopeforest, your maximum combat level will be 60.

What if I’ve Already Reached the Cap?

Fen Research has thought of that, and is introducing an ‘end game’ mechanic that will still provide you with a way to continue progressing when you’ve hit the cap.

Now, excess combat levels will level up your current episode’s obelisk, which will boost your combat prowess. You will also gain a number of these benefits in the next episode, so it’s good preparation.

The level cap for each obelisk is 470 or 460, depending on the episode.

Weapons, Armor, and Crafting Changes

Of course, this change will also affect weapons and armor, as well as crafting. Now, you can only gain gear that matches the level cap of the monsters within your current episode.

Crafting weapons now follows this formula:

  • Crafting level + 60

So, if you want to craft a level 100 weapon, you need to be at least level 40 Blacksmith.

Level Scaling and Upgrade Trees

To prevent you from getting too overpowered, monsters will feature level scaling. Effectively, monsters will never be less than 10 levels beneath you, so you still face some level of challenge.

Fen Research is also introducing upgrade trees, which lets you pick a specific upgrade whenever you level up. That will introduce character ‘builds’ too, making the game a lot more engaging.

How Will This Affect My Current Level?

When you log in after the update, your combat level will be set to the cap of your current unlocked episode, and any excess levels will increase your obelisk level.

You can learn more about the changes on Steam.
