Epic Games has announced that text chat is coming to Fortnite on December 10. When it’s here, creators can choose to add it to their islands.
There are three different methods of text chat available: party, game, or DM. In that sense, it’s similar to the typical MMORPG text chat experiences you’re familiar with.
To combat any potential unwanted experiences, Epic Games is introducing a number of filtering options. These help block personal information, mature language, and toxicity.
If you run into any more serious issues, you can report messages directly to Epic, who will then take action if they break any rules.
How Does Fortnite Text Chat Work?
If a Fortnite Creator has enabled it on their island, you can simply chat via one of the three different methods.
If you’re in a party, you can text directly with any other party members. If not, you may have to rely on the game channel, which allows you to message everyone currently playing on that island.
Lastly, there’s DMs, which allow you to directly chat with anyone on your friends list while in-game.
You can toggle between any of the three text chat types at any point, so you’re not locked into just one.
How to Use Filters and Reporting Tools
Allowing Fortnite players across the globe to send messages to each other could be a recipe for a disaster.
Fortunately, there are filtering options that allow you to block the following types of messages:
- Personal (email, credit card numbers)
- Mature language
- Toxicity
These two filtering options are on by default for any players under 13, so parents don’t have to panic.
However, if you do face any abuse, you can report it alongside photo image so Epic can review it. The team will take action if any messages violet the rules.
