Want to become a Hollow Era Shinigami (Soul Reaper)? Well, you’ve come to the right place. In this guide, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know to progress from Lost Soul to Shinigami, and then how to get your Shikai and Visored abilities.
Hollow Era Shinigami (Soul Reaper) Progression Guide
You begin Hollow Era as a ‘Lost Soul’, which is the default race of Hollow Era. If you’d like to progress to the Shinigami, or Soul Reaper, race, you need to follow these steps:
- Press and hold the ‘J’ key on your keyboard
- Follow the on-screen prompt to take on the only available quest: ‘Save Lost Soul’
- Find a nearby ‘Lost Soul’ NPC wandering around
- Press ‘E’ to interact with them, purifying them and turnign them back into a Shinigami (Soul Reaper)
- Turn in the quest to become a Shinigami
It’s that simple – you’re a now a Shinigami. Bear in mind thatone of three chain segments breaks every two minutes while you’re a Shinigami. If it breaks completely you will turn into a Hollow.
How to Get Your Shikai
Once you become a Shinigami, your first step is to reach level 15. At this point, you can unlock your Shikai. We recommend a combination of grinding monsters and completing quests to get there as quickly as possible.
Once you’re level 15, head on over to Urihiro, who will provide you with the quest ‘Shikai Training’. This involves beating a boss known as ‘Urahara’, earning you your Shikai once you’ve handed the quest in.
How to Use Your Shikai
To activate your Shikai, you first need to fill your new ‘Rage Bar’. This increases as you deal, or take, damage. Once full, press ‘Y’ to activate your Shikai.
Your Shikai remains active until you deactivate it, by holding ‘Y’, or until you run out of Rage.
How to Change Your Shikai
When you gain your Shikai, it’s rolled randomly. If you want to reroll it, you have to visit the Urahara Shop and reroll it using cash, providing you with another random Shikai.
How to Master Your Shikai
Put simply: use your Shikai to master it. Each time you use a skill associated with your Shikai, you gain a single ‘Mastery Point’. Collect the required number of points to increase your ‘Shikai Mastery’.
Here are the levels and what you get:

Visored
A Shinigami (Soul Reaper) can unlock certain Hollow abilities by use of the ‘Hogyoku’ item. To get this, you need to defeat the King of Hueco Mundo boss as many times as it takes to drop it.
Following this, you need to find ‘Shinji Hikari’ after you reach level 50, who will provide you with a quest that will provide you with Vizard.
This unlocks the following Visored abilities:
