Team Garena just dropped a massive Free Fire patch, which introduces a holiday event called ‘Winterlands: Aurora’. Not only does this provide a frosty makeover for the Battle Royale and Clash Squad maps, but new gameplay features as well.

There’s also a new ‘Mad Snowman’ mode, which is like a 3D Slither.io, new character ‘Koda’, and balance adjustments for a variety of characters and weapons.

This truly is a massive update, so let’s take a look at the more exciting new additions in greater detail. Make sure to check out our list of the best free to play gaming Christmas events as well.

Winterlands: Aurora Freezes Up Battle Royale and Clash Squad

Rather than provide a whole new holiday-themed map, Team Garena has given Bermuda a bit of a snowy makeover.

Battle Royale

Those new gameplay features we mentioned? Well, there’s Frosty Tracks grind rails that allow you to whiz around the map at high speed. You can still shoot and use throwable items while grinding on the rail.

While exploring the maps, you may find aurora-themed Coin Machines. Interact with two of them and you grant a buff to all of your teammates:

GreenRestore 2 EP per second
Red+50% armor penetration
BlueGloo Maker gets an extra 0.5 XP per second

Finally, there are three Frosty Machines you can find, which provide you with one of three new items:

Ice BoxContinuously spawns loot
Ice JeepIt’s a jeep
Ice RadarScans for enemies

Clash Squad

Clash Squad also features the Frosty Tracks, but not the special Coin or Frosty Machines.

Instead, certain Supply Gadgets receive special effects, granting the same coloured buffs to all teammates.

Mad Snowman is Like Slither.io Meets Free Fire

Mad Snowman is a brand new mode, which runs from December 20 – January 1.

You have to defeat enemies to equip snowman parts. Oh, did we mention that you’re a snowman? Each time you equip a part, you gain a stat boost, helping you defeat more enemies.

When you equip all parts, you turn into a complete snowman, which not only looks great but provides you with the best stat buffs.

If you get knocked down, you turn into a snowball and have to roll around to get back up. Your teammates can help you revive faster by standing near you.

Meet New Character Koda, the Snow Fox

Koda is a brand new character in Garena Free Fire, which provides you with aurora-themed abilities right in time for the holidays.

Aurora Vision lasts for ten seconds and boosts Koda’s movement speed by 10%. You also locate enemies behind cover every second, provided they aren’t crouching or prone.

You can read the full patch notes on the official Garena Free Fire website.
