The Game Awards 2024 was surprisingly full of free to play gaming announcements. We learned about new mech shooter Steel Hunters, the FragPunk and Warframe: 1999 release dates, and even got a brand new trailer for Splitgate 2.

But an announcement we didn’t expect was a brand new Game of Thrones game coming to mobile. It’s by Netmarble, who has a tendency to be a bit heavy-handed with its monetisation, but also has a pedigree for decent mobile RPGs.

We don’t know much about it just yet, aside from what we’ve gleaned from the teaser trailer, but it looks absolutely stunning. You play as a member of a fallen house and have to bring it back to glory. That involves teaming up with various familiar characters to battle across the entirety of Westeros.

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad Features Impressive Mobile Visuals

If the trailer are representative of the in-game visuals, then it looks like we’re in for a treat. It’s stylised but matches the grim atmosphere of the TV show, and the few characters we do see look very similar to their TV show counterparts.

The action also seems suitably fun. Combat looks weighty, with a variety of awesome melee moves to pull off. It’s difficult to say if what we saw in the trailer is representative of gameplay, but our fingers are crossed.

What isn’t clear is how monetisation will work in Game of Thrones: Kingsroad. It looks like a single player action RPG, but Netmarble is perhaps most well-known for MMORPGs.

So Game of Thrones: Kingsroad Isn’t an MMORPG?

On the official website, Netmarble does confirm that this is a story-driven action adventure though, that will take you across the lands of Westeros.

It seems you can choose from one of a number of different classes that feature varying playstyles. You can play as a sellsword, knight, or assassin, likely amongst many more.

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad launches at some point in 2025, and we’ll keep a close eye out for more information.
