Throne and Liberty has been an enormous success for NCSoft and Amazon Games. The free to play MMORPG launched a week ago on October 1 and has already wracked up a whopping three million players.

At the time of press, it sits in seventh place on the Steam top games chart. For perspective, that’s bigger than Apex Legends, Grand Theft Auto V, and Baldur’s Gate 3.

While it remains to be seen if it can stand the test of time, this is still an impressive achievement for an MMORPG in 2024. It’s safe to say that the genre is well past its heyday, when everyone and their mum was playing World of Warcraft.

Throne and Liberty Deserves The Success

Play it and it’s easy to see why it’s such a huge success. It’s gorgeous, the combat is full of action, and the speed with which you can traverse the world makes playing never feel like a chore. Whether it’s morphing to run faster, turning into an eagle to fly, or teleporting instantly to a waypoint, it’s incredibly seamless stuff.

But what probably keeps you active the most is its incredibly addictive progression system. There’s so much to do, like levelling up your character or morph, or upgrading your gear. Again, it never feels like work and just a natural part of the journey.

There’s also the fact we haven’t seen a good old fashioned grinding MMORPG for a while. As much fun as ESO, FFIXV, or GW2 are, they hand out everything on a silver platter. There isn’t much challenge so you don’t get that same sense of accomplishment.

Throne and Liberty isn’t Dark Souls for sure, but the fact that there’s a chance you actually can die in the open world is a step up. Then there’s the challenging content like dungeons and PVP that require mastery. It’s a breath of fresh air while feeling pleasingly old school.

The Content Has Continued to Flow After Launch

Another feature that we should attribute to its success is the steady stream of post launch content. The day after it arrived, NCSoft dropped a series of cosmetic celebration packs. There’s also been regular maintenance downtime to squish any bugs that crop up.

Because it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. During the early access period in particular, European players in particular experienced a whole host of server issues and instability. Throne and Liberty did address these and those that aren’t fixed yet are actively being worked on.
